Sketchbook, ca.1760-1799.

A sketchbook containing 208 coats of arms for British families, plus pages of shield shapes, probably for more coats of arms; a sketch of a classically inspired statue labeled Prudence; watercolor designs with scrolls and leaves; watercolors depicting flowers in a pot, a deer, a spotted cat, swans, and street scenes. As well, there are two designs for trade cards, one for Mitford, Carpenter and Undertaker, and the other for I. Halfpenny, Painter. The initials J.H.appear on another page. The volume also includes notes on Popes Homer and recipes for "Amber" varnish, varnish for panels, and varnish for pictures made of copal. The sketchbook may have belonged to Joseph Halfpenny.

There were two artists by the name of Joseph [Samuel] Halfpenny; the father lived 1748-1811, and the son 1787-1858. The father was born at Bishopsthorpe and was a house painter before he began to teach drawing. This volume is more likely to have belonged to the father.
